Port City Glass Celebrates its 15th Year Anniversary
Charleston, SC – September 9, 2006 -- Port City Glass, a local glass company known for implementing and utilizing new, cutting edge technology and processes, celebrates its 15th year anniversary this September. The company was established in 1991 by two bankers turned entrepreneurs, Alton McCullough and Blake Pearce, who foresaw this region’s growing need for a glass company with a focus on quality and service.
In 1991, McCullough and Pearce decided to change careers and start a glass company as they found the diversity of the industry appealing. They enlisted the help of Buddy Smith Jr., an old glass pro and the man behind the original Port City Glass which was established in 1967. When Smith retired in 1985, the company name retired with him until 1992 when Pearce and McCullough revived it for their newly established glass business. They even moved their business from North Charleston to its original building on King Street.
The company originally started with two employees and has grown to employ 23 glass professionals. Last year, Pearce and McCullough expanded their glass facility by approximately 3,300 sq. feet to a total of 10,000 sq. feet. They are also expanding the business to better serve interior design firms, and for that reason the company’s showroom has been redesigned and is being renovated. Completion date is scheduled for October 13, 2006. The showroom consists of shower door, table top glass and mirror displays including a large selection of hardware styles and finishes for shower enclosures. The company will also sell renowned Pilkington art glass.
“We expect further growth this year and plan on adding 3 to 6 additional employees within the next 12 months,” said Blake Pearce, the chairman of the company. “Our facility is located in the City of Charleston and we have worked over the years with the South Carolina Employment Security Commission in Charleston to help hire “out of work” employees.”
Today, Port City Glass services the Greater Charleston Area, and sells and installs glass and mirrors and related metalwork for commercial and residential construction. It is well-known for its commitment to providing quality glass and glazing services. The company’s mission is to provide a superior service and premier quality work to its customers.
Since beginning operations, the company has been supporting local communities in need. Last year, the company worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Trident Area to provide Christmas trees, decorations and presents to the Mt Pleasant Unit and the Shaw Unit on Mary Street. They also donated new glass storefronts to the Spirit of South Carolina project that will be a great educational tool for the children of the state. “We feel very privileged to be in the City of Charleston and feel very confident in our local economy,” said Pearce who grew up in downtown Charleston and can not think of a better place to do business anywhere in the world. “As we celebrate our 15th year anniversary, we hope to improve our services to this community and donate more time and effort to the needs of the Charleston area,” added Pearce.
Port City Glass sells and installs storefronts, curtain walls, custom glass, mirrors, shower doors, table tops and related metalwork for commercial and residential applications. Some of the most notable projects completed by the company include the Saks 5th Avenue/Majestic Square Building, North Charleston Convention Center, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, McElveen Chevrolet and McElveen Hummer and E Wall Office Complex. The company is located at 1519 King Street, Charleston, SC 29405. To learn more about the company, please contact Alton McCullough or Blake Pearce at 843-577-6500.
