CHARLESTON, S.C.
Novermber 20, 2004
This holiday season, visitors will enjoy a “taste” of holiday food and traditions as they experience “Christmas in Charleston” on holiday culinary tours. Carolina FoodPros™, a Charleston based company that promotes regional foods, artisan products and the culinary traditions of the Palmetto State, is “dressing up” its infamous culinary tours in celebration of the holidays. Visitors go behind the scenes to learn about local foods and traditions, sample Southern holiday treats and shop for specialty items to bring home. Tasting stops include the Holiday Farmer’s Market, specialty shops, artisan bakeries and chocolatiers.
Amanda Dew Manning, a 10th generation South Carolinian and local food expert shares her own holiday memories of growing up on a farm where her family gathered together to celebrate the holidays with a traditional South Carolina pit-cooked barbeque, turkey with cornbread dressing and all the trimmings, sweet potato and pecan pies, and, for New Year’s Day, Hoppin John, a traditional dish of black-eyed peas and rice.
Holiday tours run from November 26 –December 24, 2005. Tours begin in front of the Charleston Museum, on the corner of Meeting and John Streets in downtown Charleston, every Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., and run until noon.
