BIRTH OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA WINE INDUSTRY

Irvin-House Vineyards playing a key role in establishing the South Carolina Winery Association

CHARLESTON, SC
April 24, 2005

To stimulate growth of South Carolina’s wine industry, and to recognize its wine country, South Carolina Winery Association was founded in January 2005. Irvin-House Vineyards was a founding member of the association. At this year's Hilton Head Wine Festival, Irvin House was awarded two silver medals for their wines, Magnolia and Mullet Hall.

The objective of the South Carolina Winery Association is to actively encourage and support production, promotion and appreciation of South Carolina wines. There are only four wineries in South Carolina in contrast to North Carolina with more than 40 wineries. To support growth of the wine tourism in South Carolina, the association will organize events and promote South Carolina wines through wine competitions and festivals.

Founded in 2001, by Jim and Ann Irvin, the Irvin House Vineyards are located on Wadmalaw Island outside of Charleston. The winery is opened to the public Thursday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free tours are available every Saturday at 2 p.m. Visitors can taste authentic wine, visit the vineyards and stroll through the property. For more information on the Irvin-House Vineyards, visit www.charlestonwine.com or contact 843-559-6867.
