Chef Patrick Owens Opens the Doors of his Third Restaurant June 28, 2017

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – Five years after opening Opal Restaurant & Bar, Chef Patrick Owens was ready to take on yet another challenge. When the retail space two doors down from Langdon’s became available, he saw a blank canvas and the perfect location for his third restaurant. After an extensive renovation of the space, Wood & Grain – wood-fired pizza and raw bar – will open its doors on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 4 p.m.

Growing up in his grandparents’ kitchen and deeply influenced by his mother’s love for baking, Chef Owens has been making bread and other baked goods for a couple of decades. When thinking about the concept for his third restaurant, he found himself going back to making a pizza dough.

A longtime supporter of the local fishing industry, he knew that handcrafted wood fired pizza paired with a raw bar as the focus of his new restaurant would certainly make a unique combination for Mount Pleasant.

“My two favorite things are pizza and raw seafood. It is exciting to use wood to roast seafood and shellfish in an open hearth oven,” says Chef Patrick Owens.

In 2016, Chef Owens and his team traveled to California’s Sonoma Wine Country to test the authentic Italian wood fired oven made by Mugnaini. This trip sealed his decision to create a gathering place centered around open hearth cooking where he can fire up a variety of foods and pizza. Wood & Grain was born.

Debuting in June 2017, Wood & Grain will feature the freshest seasonal seafood, much of it from local waters, in combination with Chef Owens’ signature wood fired pizzas. The menu includes sophisticated items such as Roasted Octopus with Romesco and Butter Beans, freshly prepared ceviches and a variety of pizzas, salads and raw seafood. All menu items will be cooked in the wood fired oven and the restaurant will also make fresh bread for Langdon’s and Opal.

“Our pizza dough has its own formula dictated by the oven,” says Chef Owens. “We will handcraft pizzas with the finest seasonal bounty from regional farms and purveyors. We will use simple Lowcountry products but give them a unique global twist to create an unexpected combination of flavors.”

The modern and welcoming restaurant interior, full of textures and woods, was designed by Amy Trowman Design. The space features a lively bar area with special seating at the raw bar. The state of the art wood fired brick oven fills the room and allows for the guests to take advantage of the energy in the open kitchen. Warm cherry wood dominates the space.  Chef Owens embraced the open kitchen concept and combined it with high ceiling, industrial-inspired light fixtures and community tables to achieve an immersive and more casual feel. The restaurant features artwork created by artist John Duckworth.

Raw Bar will open daily at 4 p.m., and the full-service dinner menu will be available from 5 p.m. The restaurant will close at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Wood & Grain’s Chef de Cuisine is Jeffrey Allen. The restaurant is located at 778 S Shelmore Blvd 102 in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
